New writing opportunity

My name is David Watson and I’m the editor of Art Disability Culture magazine (formerly DAIL).

Art Disability Culture is the leading Disability Arts magazine in the UK and we aim to stimulate debate by providing a platform for new voices and diverse opinions, whilst addressing the needs and desires of the diverse communities we represent, highlighting the issues that are important to them. I think we have a duty to be bold, to cover subjects and events outside our traditional comfort zone, to ruffle a few feathers.

I’m always looking for new writers (particularly those based outside of London) so if there’s something you particularly want to write, be it reviews, interviews, opinion pieces (the more vitriolic & controversial the better), feature articles, etc, then get in touch. I’m also actively seeking cartoons, artwork, etc, and I’m open to more lifestyle oriented articles (science, extreme sports, dating, sexuality, etc) as well. In the past, we have printed short stories & poems and, while we don’t at the moment, there’s no reason why we won’t in the future (particularly if I have 2/3 pages to fill in a hurry).

We don’t usually commission work unless we are familiar with a writer but we do pay for everything we print (normally around £65 for 500 word reviews and £110 for longer pieces). We’re bi-monthly and our copy deadline for the August/September issue is the end of June (though if something great comes in later than that I’ll find a place for it). The next copy deadline after that will be the end of August/start of September for our October/November issue.

I work Monday-Thursday, 10am-6pm, and can be contacted on 0207 749 4350 or by emailing david@ldaf.org or adc@ldaf.org. If you wish to obtain a sample issue of the magazine please email your address & contact details to adc@ldaf.org.
