In the Picture
Scope say that currently 60,000 children in the UK have no role models in literature. They carried out a mini survey which revealed that families with disabled children were frustrated at the lack of appropriate images in books. Scope plan to work closely with illustrators and publishers to raise awareness of the need for more images of disabled children in illustrated books. They want images of disabled children to appear in books in a natural way, alongside images of non-disabled children. The aim of this is for disabled children to be seen as equals to non-disabled children, rather than being objects of curiosity.
